But if it is something of interest, you wont be alone. More than 5,000 people are expected to take part in the mass participation triathlon that will run on the same day as the elite Columbia Threadneedle World Triathlon Leeds on June 12.

The event involves three elements – an open water swim in Roundhay Park’s Waterloo Lake, a bike ride and then a run.

Triathlon also features crucial ‘transitions’ between disciplines, when competitors change from wetsuits to cycling gear and then cycling gear to running gear in designated zones situated in Roundhay Park and Millennium Square.

The route itself will see the competitors travel through Roundhay, Moortown, Meanwood, Weetwood, Headingley and Woodhouse and parts of the city centre.

Race organisers have pitched it as an event for all, so there are several options in terms of distance that could make it more attractive to you:

Beginner distance

This is for those wishing to dip their toes in their first triathlon. It involves a 400metre swim in Roundhay Park’s Waterloo Lake before a 15km bike ride and finally a 2.5km run starting and finishing in Millennium Square.
