Everyone is talking about the Tour de France – including some of Yorkshire’s most recognisable faces.
From the people that secured the Grand Depart’s visit to the county to popstars and soapstars, many of the county’s famous faces have been quite literally gearing up for the arrival of the world’s greatest cycle race with help from the Yorkshire Evening Post and The Yorkshire Post.
Through a series of specially created online videos, we have asked both Tour organisers and famous faces to Go the Mile and tell us about their plans for Le Tour while cycling on a special branded bike.
We will be unleashing a pair of our exclusive two-wheeled interviews here on the YEP website each day until Thursday, kicking off with a bumper edition today.
Emmerdale star Nick Miles, who plays Jimmy King in the Yorkshire soap, Super League legend Jamie Peacock MBE and the man credited with bringing the Grand Depart to the county, Gary Verity, are the first available to our readers.
Interviews with figures including Bradford-born popstar Gareth Gates, more Emmerdale cast members, well-known radio presenters and high-ranking officials from Leeds City Council, the lead authority on the organisation of the Yorkshire Tour stages, are soon to be released.
Nicola Furbisher, managing editor of the Yorkshire Evening Post, said: “Cycling and the Grand Depart are the words on the lips of millions of people in Yorkshire.
“With the world’s most watched annual sporting event just a fortnight away, we thought what better way to mark the upcoming Tour than by asking some of the county’s best known faces to take to two wheels and tell us how they’re gearing up? We want everyone to be in on the excitement of what will be a landmark event in Yorkshire’s history, so log on and see how some of the region’s famous faces and Yorkshire Tour figures are set to celebrate.”
Our online viewers can look forward to insights into everything from Emmerdale’s Grand Depart special to Jamie Peacock’s favourite place in Yorkshire, and who some of the county’s well-known figures are backing to come out on top during the Grand Depart.
Our exclusive interviews have been recorded as part of our ongoing On Yer Bike! campaign, which encourages readers to saddle up and send in their cycling images.
Whether you’re out exploring the Dales with your family and friends, commuting to work, taking part in a charity ride, cycling in fancy dress or simply nipping out on the bike to get some fresh air, we want to hear from you.
We will publish readers’ On Yer Bike! cycling pictures in-paper and online until Le Tour rolls into action from Leeds’ Headrow for the start of the Leeds to Harrogate stage one on July 5.
To get involved send in your pictures, with a note telling us your name, age, where you are from and where your On Yer Bike! snap was taken, by emailing our Tour reporter at firstname.lastname@example.org or tweeting @jonnybrownyep.
