An application has been submitted by Leeds City Council to ensure the bridge can continue to carry buses and emergency vehicles on the vital route into the city.

Plans include removing the central reserve, replacing the existing mass concrete infill with a new reinforced concrete deck and re-pointing the masonry abutments, parapets and pilasters. The bridge would also be re-painted, cast iron bollards included on both footways and a segregated cycle lane introduced.

The bridge is famous for being the spot French inventor Louis Le Prince filmed with the one-lens camera he had patented in 1888 – thought to be the world’s first successful moving pictures. It was constructed between 1870-1873 and is Grade II-listed.

The council’s design statement reads: “The bridge is on a vital public transport corridor, including the Elland Road Park and Ride bus route, which forms an essential part of the long term transport strategy for Leeds.”
