Family of the Week - Young

This week we hear from Karl Young, an award-winning Parenting Blogger and Project Manager at Search Laboratory, a Leeds-based Digital Marketing agency, along with his partner Georgina and his sons Theodore (Ted), two, and Charles (Charlie), seven months.

What’s the hardest thing about being a parent?

The one thing that I struggle to deal with even today is the lack of sleep. Not one night is the same with young children so getting a good night’s sleep is almost impossible.

What can your children not live without?

My eldest Ted could not live without Mr Tumble. It is the first thing he wants to watch when he wakes, he has an abundance of Mr Tumble toys, teddies and books he carts around.

Mini moan - what really gets your goat?

I would say the thing that grinds my gears the most is when a restaurant advertises itself as family friendly and offers junior meals, but doesn’t have any cutlery suitable for kids.

What’s your favourite family day out?

Stockeld Park in Wetherby has something to offer all year round: In winter it is the perfect Christmas adventure and in summer it is an action journey, packed full of fun with an outdoor roller rink, maze, go karts, parks, climbing and the Enchanted Forest.

What’s the children’s favourite food/meal?

Ted loves nothing more than a bowl of vegetable rice with a corn on the cob or two on the side. Charlie is rather fond of sweet potato mash.

What’s the best thing about weekends and why?

I always look forward to spending time with our friends and family. Taking the kids out to the park, visiting local attractions and restaurants keeps everyone busy and well entertained.

What are your top tips for getting children to do what you ask?

I often use the ‘daddy has done it/will do it if you don’t’ approach. This works 80 per cent of the time as Ted likes being independent and doesn’t like the idea of having someone doing something for him, if he can do it himself.

What’s the number one thing you would change about Leeds?

Parking has become an even bigger challenge in recent years for both visitors and residents. When you have a young child it is often easier to drive than take public transport, as transporting heavy bags around all day long can be annoying and stressful.

What hobbies/pastimes do you enjoy as a family and separately?

When I get chance I write my own parenting and lifestyle blog called the Yorkshire Dad. I discuss everything from parental advice, product reviews and regional events. As a family we really enjoy watching Disney films and have just started venturing to the child friendly screenings at the cinema in Harrogate and Leeds. We must have watched Frozen at least one hundred times!
