Family mash-up snap is a winner

Emma Trowsdale fused a selection of pictures of her three children to create the final image which took first place in Changing Faces of Leeds’s abstract category.

The exhibition at Leeds City Museum received more than 500 entries from local amateur snappers from which a selection were chosen to appear in the final display.

For the abstract category entrants were asked to be more creative and to use digital manipulation in their photography.

In her submission, Emma said: “This image is made up of several photos I took of my children: Amber, eight, Jack, six and Bella, four.

“I took it as part of my 2015 ‘photo-a-day’ challenge. I try to take a photo every day. Sometimes these are ‘diary’ photos to represent my day, and sometimes the photo is the focus rather than what it represents. This image is a bit of both. I love to take photos of my children but equally I love doing something a bit different with them in post-processing.”

Commenting on Emma’s photo, the competition judge said: “Emma has made this technique look easy with her creative piece of abstract work. The portrait is fun, imaginative and fits perfectly with the Changing Faces theme.”

The exhibition, which runs until June 5, is a dynamic display of colourful images spanning generations of people who have lived or worked in the city.

Councillor Judith Blake, leader of Leeds City Council, said: “What makes this such a special and exciting exhibition is that, at its heart, it’s about the people of Leeds and the many different experiences that have inspired them to pick up a camera and capture an image that will last forever.”
