A GRIEVING relative has spoken of a family’s devastation after a house fire in Sheffield claimed five lives, including a nine-week-old baby and two young children.
As investigations began yesterday into the cause of the blaze in Nether Edge, Ishfaq Hussain Kayani, cousin of 54-year-old grandmother Shabbina Begum, who died trying to save her 20-year-old daughter as well as the children, said: “It’s just a huge tragedy. Words cannot describe how sad this is.
“Just in a matter of minutes the whole family has been destroyed. The whole family has gone.”
South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue area manager Phil Shillito said 25 firefighters were sent to tackle the blaze in Wake Road which broke out shortly after midnight on Sunday.
“This is a tragic reminder of the devastating effects of fire and our thoughts are with the families of those involved in this incident,” he said.
“I can confirm that around 25 firefighters and four appliances attended a very challenging incident last night and worked hard to recover and rescue five casualties from the premises. Unfortunately, they didn’t survive and we’re now working with the police to investigate the cause of fire.”
The fire service is leading the investigation and it is understood that initially there is no suggestion of any foul play being involved.
