Fallen soldiers to be remembered at Somme centenary service

THE NAMES of men from Morley who were killed during the first weekend of The Battle of The Somme will be read out during an outdoor service of commemoration.

The Morley Salvation Army Band will provide music in Scatcherd Park from around 2.30pm on Sunday as members of the public join dignitaries, uniformed personnel and cadets to mark the centenary of the First World War battle.

Morley Remembrance Committee chairman Terry Grayshon said: “Those young men, who had signed up for The Leeds Pals when their recruiting tram visited Morley, could not have known the absolute horror that lay ahead of them. This service of commemoration will allow Morley, as a community, to come together and remember their sacrifice.”

A specially designed Somme Wreath containing the “Bleuet de France”, the French symbol of Remembrance, will be placed at Morley War Memorial by the Deputy Mayor of Morley, Coun Janet Harrison, at 3pm.

The service, led by the Reverend Mike Godfrey, will also include contributions from local historian Tony Dunlop and Churwell Community Choir. A film loaned by The Imperial War Museum will be screened afterwards at St Mary’s Church Hall alongside refreshments.

Funding was provided by the Outer South Community Committee of Leeds City Council.
