Faces of Leeds: Stompers' snap striking a chord

Chloe’s picture was the winner of first prize in Changing Faces of Leeds’s group category and shows the Leeds City Stompers. The category received a huge range of different entries, including happy families and friends socialising all across Leeds at many of city’s Saturday morning park runs.

The competition judge was looking for photos that would make visitors think about who the people in the pictures are, how they know each other, and what the photograph says about their relationship.

In her submission, Chloe said: “Leeds City Stompers, the red hot blues band, conjuring the spirit of prohibition America, needed a fresh new image and identity that was capable of representing their old time, vintage band in a modern and accessible manner.” The competition judge said: “This location group shot is brilliant. Composed perfectly, with wonderful tones and expressions.”

Currently on at Leeds City Museum until June 5, The Changing Faces of Leeds exhibition features a fascinating series of pictures which capture generations of people who have lived or worked in the city. The exhibition received more than 500 entries from amateur snappers across Leeds. The exhibition also features a series of workshops and events for children and adults.

Councillor Judith Blake, leader of Leeds City Council, said: “With our bid to be named European Capital of Culture 2023 gathering pace, we’re determined that everyone has the opportunity to feel part of culture in Leeds, and this exhibition typifies and that ambition perfectly.”
