Eyes bigger than his belly? Food and drink is too tempting at Leeds' new Bar Soba

A Thai Salad at Bar Soba on Greek Street.

The news Bar Soba was relocating to Greek Street was very well received at Pink Gorilla HQ, as it’s virtually on our doorstep.

Last week’s grand opening coincided with the unveiling of the new street food menu, which fuses Pan-Asian food with hints of western comfort grub.

First up, the new bar design is stunning. Graffiti Geisha’s, neon lighting and an industrial finish are perfect for food, cocktails and partying. Whilst checking out the menu, I got stuck into a tasty Drumstick Caipirovska - Vanilla and Raspberry vodkas with lime juice and the retro lollipop.

Picking starters from the small plates section was a bit of a chore, as there’s so much to go at, so we more or less ordered the lot. Korean Popcorn Chicken was a definite highlight. The star of the show, however, had to be the Cheeseburger Spring Rolls served with Soba Burger Mayo, which were so good that a full-blown cat fight almost erupted over the last one.

For mains, I was feeling a little bit spicy so braved General Tso’s Chicken, which is wok fried with a sweet and spicy glaze. Cooked with cashews, veg, ginger and soy, and served on Jasmine rice. It is a new favourite.

My eyes were perhaps a little bigger than my belly when we ordered sides, but Dirty Katsu Fries proved too tempting. A large basket of crispy fries loaded with buttermilk fried chicken, Katsu curry sauce, sriracha and mango mayo, crispy shallots and spring onion, this devilish little dish reinvents the term ‘food porn.’

Needless to say I had to loosen my belt and rolled back to my office. Bar Soba have delivered with the remix.
