Coun Gerry Harper presented Epilepsy Action with a cheque for £27,317 - the culmination of a year in office, during which time he and partner Lady Mayoress Lynn Scholes created, fundraised and spoke at more than 450 events.

The extensive work done by the pair combined awareness and fundraising, with donations coming from far and wide.

Coun Harper knows only too well how serious living with epilepsy can be, having been diagnosed with the condition in 2004.

During his year as Mayor, Coun Harper engaged with many local and multi-faith communities while raising awareness of epilepsy.

He said: “Fundraising for Epilepsy Action has been a huge part of my year as mayor and I’ve been involved in so many wonderful projects.

“But the outreach work in local communities has had an even bigger impact on me.

“It has made me even more determined to help others with epilepsy in the future.

“I would like to thank the wonderful people of our city for all their fantastic support and generosity and for sharing their stories of epilepsy.

“It’s a very complex neurological condition that can affect anyone at any time in their life.”

Philip Lee, chief executive of Epilepsy Action, said: “We’re immensely grateful to Gerry and Lynn for fundraising for Epilepsy Action last year.

“The money they’ve raised will help us support even more people, making them feel less isolated and more able to cope with everyday life. Gerry’s commitment to speaking out about his epilepsy, and offering advice to others, has been both inspiring and invaluable in spreading awareness about a much misunderstood condition.”
