Former Leeds United player Ben Parker is tackling an endurance event for a cause that couldn’t be closer to his heart.

Ben, 26, will be taking on a military-style 10km run and assault course at Bramham Park near Wetherby on Sunday, March 16, in aid of the Myfanwy Townsend Melanoma Research Fund.

The Pontefract-born footballer’s mum, Deborah, has recently been diagnosed with melanoma, a type of skin cancer.

Melanoma also claimed the life of Bruce Craven, Ben’s former physio at United, at the age of just 32.

Ben, who currently plays for Guiseley AFC, told the Yorkshire Evening Post: “This is a cause that means a massive amount to me.

“What happened with Bruce shows melanoma can affect anyone, no matter how healthy you are.

“I’ve been delighted with the amount of backing I’ve had already and it would be great if as many people as possible showed their support.”

Ben is taking part in tomorrow’s event with his 23-year-old brother Jack and their friend Adrian Joynson, 26.

If all goes well, then they are planning further fundraising activities during the rest of the year.

The Bramham Park event will cap a busy weekend for Ben, as he was due to turn out for Guiseley on Saturday in their away game at Stockport County.

“Our start time on Sunday is at a quarter-to-ten in the morning and I expect I’ll still be feeling a bit stiff from the Stockport game,” said the defender.

“It’s good that I’ll have Jack and Adrian running with me, I’m sure we’ll be encouraging each other along the way.”
