2014 Leeds Food and Drink Festival will get tastebuds tingling

A mouthwatering array of tasty morsels are on the menu at the biggest ever Leeds Food and Drink Festival.

The 17 day-event, now in its eighth year, kicks off on May 23 to celebrate the city’s booming eating and drinking scene.

Events include pop-up restaurants, a festival for children and a special Tour de France-inspired section at the Yorkshire Food and Drink Show in Millennium Square.

Deborah Copeland, director of marketing and communications at organisers Leeds and Partners, said: “Leeds Food and Drink Festival returns for its ninth consecutive year, bigger and better than ever. Our ambition is to establish the Leeds Food and Drink Festival as the biggest and best urban food festival in the UK, and really showcase the amazing offer we have in the city.”

The festival, which is run in partnership with Asda, will take place at a range of venues including bars, restaurants, street food vans and even a pink shed at Trinity Leeds.

An exclusive pop-up dining room, the shed will be hosted by a different eaterie each day and can house just eight diners.

There will also be beer-brewing master classes, supper clubs and cookery demonstrations.

The grand festival finale will be the annual three day Yorkshire Food and Drink Show in Millennium Square - backed by the YEP - from June 6 to 8, featuring hundreds of food producers, signature dishes from city restaurants and artisan food specialists.

Some of the city’s renowned street food vans will be there too, showing their vibrant offerings which will be celebrated when the UK Street Food Awards comes to Leeds later in the year.

And at the Grand DeParty, a French section at the show, visitors will sample French-themed produce from the city’s top French restaurants, including Kendells Bistro and Brasserie Blanc.

Deborah added: “Each year the city’s food and drink offer goes from strength to strength, with the emergence of more independent restaurants, more rare artisan producers and more amazing street food.

“The festival is a great draw to residents and visitors alike, and this year with an exceptional programme across the 17-day period, we aim to attract yet more visitors to the city to experience our exciting and thriving food and drink scene.”

Young foodies won’t be left out as Boomerang Jam Kid’s Festival, being held at The Tetley, will offer delicious food and entertainment for youngsters.

Vegetarians will also be able to enjoy the festivities at Veg Out, at Wharf Chambers from May 31 until June 1.

Leeds Markets will host Handmade in Yorkshire in Victoria Gardens between June 6 and 8 with local producers.
