Taking on ‘Dragon’s Den’ business task

The brightest business brains of tomorrow are celebrating a ‘Dragon’s Den’ win that saw them tasked with devising a marketing campaign for their school’s sporting facilities.

Lizzie Priestley, Anna Wilby, Matthew Williamson and Jonnie Jubb wowed judges with their creative idea, as well as their market research, logo design and supplier negotiation.

Their vision will now provide a working framework for Bruntcliffe School to use in promoting its sporting offer to pupils, schools and the community.

They will also get to interview alumni such as rugby stars Lee Smith and Scott Murrell, for a promotional video.

Ross Bennett, director of Engaging Education, which ran the project, said: “Seeing such enthusiasm, spirit and commitment was truly inspiring.

“The children learnt not just about business, branding and marketing, but also communication and teamwork. They went above and beyond what we asked of them at every turn.”

Around 40 Year 10 pupils took part in the project, pitching to headteacher Heather Scott, Morley Town councillor Wynn Kidger and Rachael Kennedy from Morley Chamber of Trade.

Pupil Asia Crawford said: “The project gave us chance to use our creative, communication and time management skills. Having deadlines was good as it was just like the workplace, while the pitch will stand us in good stead for job interviews and formal situations we will face in the future.”

Pupil Stephen Haigh said: “I feel much more confident and able to pursue any ambition in the future.”

The winning logo was created by Sienna Henry-Fisher, Kelsey Glynn, Lauren Griffiths and Taylor Goldthorpe.

Headteacher Heather Scott said: “I couldn’t be prouder.

“The pupils researched their brief incredibly well, worked as strong teams and collaborated on developing ideas.

“They were confident, articulate and talented in producing a wide range of superb ideas for the pitch, showing no nerves at all.”

She added: “The business panel members were really impressed and want to talk further to our Year 10 students about their role as ambassadors in business.”

Gearing up for exam revision
