STAR pupil Aiden Green has not had a day off school for the last five years.

Today he leaves Victoria Primary School, in East End Park, with a prize for his rare achievement.

The school rewards pupils for full attendance with trips out, prizes and certificates.

Headteacher Alison Carrick said: “We are amazed and proud of Aiden’s achievement. It is fantastic that so many of our children understand that every day at school counts.”

She said in the past five years attendance figures across the school had improved dramatically, going from just six children attending every day of school in 2008-2009 to 41 with full attendance this year.

She added: “As well as that 11 of our classes in school have an average annual attendance of over 95 per cent this year, which shows the impact we are having.

Attendance is now taken into account for school Ofsted inspections.

Aiden, whose favourite subjects are maths and science, said: “I attend every day because I want to be smart, go to university, get a good job and become a doctor. I feel spoiled to have gone on so many 100 per cent reward trips. The best one was going in a limousine to Xscape at Castleford for sledging.”

His mum Angela added: “It is important as a parent to ensure your child goes to school. He is not off with a minor sniffle and has had chicken pox and bugs during half-term holidays. We are all very proud of him and his two older step-brothers also have good attendance.”

Stewart Harper, chair of governors, said: “To manage full attendance for five years running is great. We know how much of a link there is between attendance and achievement and the difference that can make to longer-term success. Aiden really has taken a leap towards a bright future and we wish him well.”
