Leeds pupils learn artistic way to express feelings

Pupils at a north Leeds school have been chairing their very own creative project, with a little help from talented Leeds Met art students.

The youngsters, from Allerton C of E Primary, decorated 400 miniature cardboard chairs and nine canvas deckchairs, as part of an initiative run by Leeds-based arts and health charity Space2.

Their colourful artworks will go on display at the West Yorkshire Playhouse, on July 17, as part of a community showcase performance called Recipe for Life.

Dawn Fuller, strategic director of Space2, said: “The aim is to encourage every child to think about their thoughts, dreams, aspirations, anxieties and worries, and offer them a creative way of expressing these feelings.

“The results are highly personal and reflect the children’s own experiences.”

Nine final-year Leeds Met students volunteered to bring their graphic and visual art skills to the project, which is designed to help support health and wellbeing.

Illustration, graphic design and calligraphy were just some of the expertise they brought to the table.

Each Leeds Met student worked with a group of six Allerton Primary pupils to help them decorate the chairs, write poetry and develop emotional understanding.

The children have also been working with performance poet Michelle Scally Clarke. Year six pupil Vanessa Flynn, who is 11, said: “I think this project is good.

“At least people know our opinion – they know what we think and that’s important.”

Rachel Ogunsina, also 11, added: “You get to put your own ideas down on paper – it’s fun.”

School leaders, teachers, governors and MPs from across the region will meet today for a summit that will see delegates discuss academisation and the impact real-terms cuts to funding is having on schools.

Yorkshire school leaders meet in Leeds to discuss academies and education cuts
