The youngsters, from the under nine and under 11 teams of Cleckheaton and Gomersal FC, responded to a call for volunteers from Leeds City Council’s parks department.

Manager Shaun Hamill said: “Every year we like to do a sponsored event to help raise funds for the team, usually it’s football related but this year we spotted the plea for help and thought it a great opportunity to raise money, help the community and leave a legacy for our kids.”

Plans are in place to place a total of 10,000 trees at Temple Newsam, which began the end of last year. Visit www.leeds.gov.uk for more information on volunteering.
