The 38-year-old was jailed for his part in the break-in after pleading guilty.

Leeds Crown Court heard the incident happened at 3.30am on June 20 this year when two men let themselves into the property through an unlocked door.

Olivia Murray, prosecuting, said: “[The door] was closed but left unlocked as he let out his cat and went down to the basement.”

Ms Murray said that when the cat owner came back upstairs he found Udahemuka picking up loose change that was on the fireplace and his accomplice unplugging the TV.

The cat owner’s roommate came downstairs and captured Udahemuka, who pulled a wallet from his pocket, and they locked him in the house.

But his accomplice had already ran out the door and got away with two Samsung mobile phones, packets of cigarettes worth £60 and an unknown amount of Euros.

A next door neighbour who heard the commotion rang the police.

Ben Campbell, mitigating, said Udahemuka is not a British citizen so this sentence may mean he’s facing deportation.

Mr Campbell said the defendant suffers from depression and anxiety.

Jailing the defendant for two years and four months, Recorder Andrew Haslam QC described it as a ‘mean offence’ and said: “It was no doubt a frightening experience for both of them to find a total stranger inside their home.

“Some occupiers of homes never get over the fact that someone has been in their property without their permission.

“Some people even have to move because of offences by people like you.”
