A 21-year-old man who died after suffering a heart attack may have taken illicit drugs, an inquest opening heard.

Shane Kirkbright, of Normanton, was taken to Pinderfields Hospital at Wakefield in the early hours last Friday after falling seriously ill at a flat above the One Stop shop in Church Road, Altofts.

Coroner’s officer Jayne Melrose told an inquest opening at Wakefield yesterday: “He was breathing and conscious. It was suggested that he had taken illicit substances.”

The court heard Mr Kirkbright was taken to Pinderfields Hospital, where he suffered a cardiac arrest and died at 8am.

Mrs Melrose said police were not treating his death as suspicious. The hearing was adjourned pending the outcome of further inquiries.

A 27-year-old woman and two men, aged 19 and 37, arrested in connection with the incident remain on police bail pending further inquiries.
