Driver was speared by fence post - inquest

A musician was speared through the neck after his van veered off the road and smashed through a fence just hours after he played a gig.

Bassist James William Winter had played with bandmates Asomvel at the Riverside pub in Selby the night before the tragedy.

An inquest heard that when his van plunged off the A64 and burst into flames near Tadcaster the next morning, he was still over twice the legal alcohol limit.

Mr Winter had been warned by a fellow bandmate not to drive and was seen by another motorist to be asleep at the wheel just before the fatal crash.

The 43-year-old's van had clipped the back of a car before it careered off the road on October 18 last year.

A wooden splinter pierced his neck as the van smashed through trees and a wooden fence before it ended up on its side and burst into flames.

Deputy Coroner Geoff Fell recorded that Mr Winter's death was the result of a road accident while under the influence of alcohol.
