Drawing on a new chapter for Leeds cafe

A stalwart favourite of the city's independent food and drink scene is under new ownership for the first time in 24 years.

Arts Cafe on Call Lane has been taken over by the company New Citizens, with Matt Long and Stu Butterworth as directors, and the firm was behind the successful summer Chow Down events as well as Canal Mills.

They told City Buzz that they want to retain the core values of the bistro which serves understated fine food using local ingredients as well as doubling up as a gallery showcasing the work of local artists, while putting their own stamp on the place.

Mr Long said: “It’s a staple of the indie scene in Leeds, with a lot of history and heritage that we didn’t want to lose.

“We don’t want to completely change the concept, more bring it up to date and give it a refresh.

“We’re still maintaining the gallery element of the venue and will be displaying works from exciting artists on a four week rotation.”

The duo have worked with the existing team at Arts to refresh the menu and the drinks list, both of which are available with the new look venue re-opening today.

Arts Cafe opened in 1994.
