Dramatic images of some of the major incidents in Leeds from the last four decades feature in a book marking 40 years of the West Yorkshire Fire Service.

Images of Fire was released today to commemorate the anniversary of the creation of the brigade – replacing seven smaller brigades – in April 1974.

Revealing the bravery of firefighters on the ground at major incidents, the book includes photographs of fires at Kirkgate Market in 1975, Crawshaw High School in Pudsey in 2001 and Victoria Park School in Bramley in 2004.

Pictures of rescues from a sewer shaft in Stourton in 2002 and a trench in Yeadon in 1998 are also included, along with images from the Bradford City stadium fire which killed 56 people in 1985.

Chief fire officer Simon Pilling said: “Images of Fire is dedicated to all the men and women who have helped provide and deliver a tremendous service to the public and business communities of West Yorkshire over the last 40 years.”

The book also takes a look back in time at how the brigade has evolved through technological and cultural changes.

Former chief fire officer of Devon Fire and Rescue Service, Neil Wallington, compiled the book.

He added: “My new West Yorkshire title contains some of the most dramatic images of the fire service in action ever captured by the camera.”

West Yorkshire Fire Service was formed when the West Riding and County Borough Brigades were amalgamated.

This saw the West Riding County Fire Service, Leeds City Fire Brigade, Wakefield City Fire Brigade, Dewsbury County Borough Fire Brigade, Halifax County Borough Fire Brigade, Huddersfield County Borough Fire Brigade and Bradford City Fire Brigade come together.

The images were all taken by the brigade’s photographic team.

Copies of the book will be available in shops for £14.99 or by visiting www.firebookshop.co.uk
