In celebration of International Women's Day, Trinity Leeds is hosting a fun disco-themed aerobics event to encourage more people to become fit and active.

Undertaken as part of the city's successful Leeds Girls Can initiative, which aims to motivate more women to get involved in sport, the special 'Clubbercise' party will blend a fusion of dance, toning and combat moves which are suitable for people of all fitness levels and experience.

Clubbercise is famed for its exercise classes which take place in a darkened room setting, accompanied by disco lights, LED glow sticks and a soundtrack of old and new club hits, making it a fun-fuelled alternative to traditional gym classes.

The event will be held on Thursday 8 March, from 6pm to 8pm, on the ground floor of Trinity Leeds, with attendees encourgaed to come along in comfortable clothing and appropriate footwear.

To get the party started, the first 50 participants to arrive on the day will receive a pair of Clubbercise glow sticks, but if you miss out you can always bring a splash of colour with brightly coloured clothing to really get into the spirit of the event.

A continuing success

Clubbercise follows on from last year's hugely successful Zumba class, which was hosted for the same cause, and it is hoped the event this year will be equally popular.

Speaking ahead of the event, Dan Wharton, marketing manager at Trinity Leeds, said: "Hundreds of women took part in last year's event - we had friends, families, school children, office workers and grandmas all getting involved.

"The atmosphere was fantastic and we're sure we'll see the same incredible level of support for this year's International Women's Day.

"It's all about bringing people together and it's completely free, so come down and give it a go!"

Growing women's participation in sport

Supporting the event on the day and offering a wealth of advice and support will be ambassadors from the successful Leeds Girls can initiative.

More than 600 women are currently taking part in Leeds Girls can activities across the city, including running, cycling and roller skating, with 61 per cent of those participating identifying themselves as inactive before enrolling.

Organised by Leeds City Council, Trinity Leeds and This Girl Can, this free Clubbercise event is just one of many classes to be held across the city to mark International Women's Day and with so much on offer, it is hoped more women will be inspired to get involved in sport and have the courage to give something a go.

"The response last year to the first exercise themed activity to mark International Women's Day at Trinity Leeds was absolutely fantastic and we are really looking forward to another great turnout at this year's Clubbercise event," says Councillor James Lewis, Leeds City Council's executive member with responsibility for sport.

"We want to encourage people of all ages and experience to enjoy sport and exercise and Clubbercise is certainly a unique way in which to encourage more people to participate in an atmosphere of club hits and glowsticks.
