A detailed planning application has been submitted to Leeds City Council for the development on the Wellington Street site which will create apartments aimed at young professionals in the city.

The scheme will provide 237 purpose-built apartments for Grainger PLC, the UK’s largest specialist residential landlord, and is one of the first private rented sector schemes in Leeds.

Designed by architects at The Harris Partnership, on behalf of Sterling Investments, the proposed scheme would see a distinctive residential tower increasing from 11 to 18 storeys close to the River Aire.

The Harris Partnership’s chairman, Paul Mitchell, said: “This is one of the most significant redevelopment schemes in the city centre and a truly exciting opportunity to create a unique and visually arresting residential building on a key gateway location into Leeds.”

The development will include 121 two-bedroom and 116 one-bedroom apartments beneath a rooftop residents’ lounge, with a restaurant and a bar on the ground floor and basement parking for 72 vehicle and 140 cycle spaces.

The YEP is now based on Whitehall Road, after moving from Wellington Street in 2012. The former base, which housed both The Yorkshire Post and Yorkshire Evening Post, was opened in 1970 by Prince Charles before being demolished in 2014.
