Death of Leeds man who served for the Yorkshire Regiment in war

A veteran from Bramley who served in the Second World War has died at 93, his granddaughter has confirmed.

Peter Paylor, who was born in Cologne but moved to Bramley when he was very small, served in the Royal Signal Corp from the age of 18 for four years until the end of the war.

Granddaughter Sarah McNicholl said that his proudest moment was landing on Normandy‘s Sword Beach in 1944 on D-Day.

“It was his proudest, but most terrifying moment, but he never talked about it in a showy way,” she said.

“He didn’t want thanks or praise and was just happy that he had played his part. He was a really bright, chirpy guy and just your typical granddad.

“He used to love walking. Every day he used to walk into Leeds city centre and after the war, he hitchhiked across Europe to meet his brother.”

“He lived a very simple life, and was happiest at home. He didn’t want any fuss and just asked us to send him off with his medals to the sound of the Last Post.”

Peter’s funeral will take place at 1pm today at Rawdon Crematorium.
