Main story. The dream of creating a £27m museum in the heart of Leeds became a reality today thanks to the biggest heritage lottery grant awarded in Yorkshire. Heritage chiefs have agreed to pay out almost £19.5m towards transforming the Leeds Institute, with most of the rest paid by Leeds City Council. Exhibits will be split between two sites - a new resource centre built at Clarence Dock to house reserve pieces, while showpiece exhibitions go on display at the renovated city centre venue. The award will also ensure planners can put in place a crucial piece of the cultural jigsaw growing around Millennium Square.
