Main story. A family of travellers have failed in a landmark legal battle against their eviction from Leeds council-owned land. The Law Lords - the highest court in the country - rejected the Maloney family’s argument that their human rights were infringed when they were evicted from playing fields at Tingley.

The decision could have had a huge impact across the country.

If the Maloney family had succeeded in the case against Leeds City Council, every time a land owner wanted to evict trespassers they would have to consider the “right to respect for a home” under the European Convention on Human Rights.
