Main story. The ringleader of the July 7 bombings - in which 52 people were killed - played a key role in helping Leeds police deal with rival youth gangs. Mohammad Sidique Khan - a former learning mentor at Hillside Primary school in Beeston, Leeds - worked closely with West Yorkshire Police to stop confrontation between rival factions in the city. Khan, who was brought up in Beeston and then moved to Dewsbury, made a rapid transition from law-abiding citizen to terrorist. He had worked for the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI)in helping to promote British firms overseas.
