Woman punched unconscious by ex-partner awoke to find his foot on her throat during attack at her home in Leeds

A thug who punched his former partner unconscious then made threats to kill her after being arrested has been jailed for two years.

A court heard the victim regained consciousness to find Ryan Semeniuk with his foot on her throat during the attack in the kitchen of her home.

Leeds Crown Court heard Semeniuk and the victim had been in a relationship for three years and have a son together.

They had split up at the time of the attack on June 29 last year.

Rukhshanda Hussain, prosecuting, said the pair remained in contact with each other over the care of their son.

On the night of the attack the defendant met his former partner outside her home in Belle Isle, Leeds, after she had spent the evening out with friends.

Miss Hussain said the woman remembered being in the living room with the defendant but then waking up on the kitchen floor with Semeniuk's foot on her throat.

The 27-year-old defendant left the property.

The victim got up but realised she could not see out of her eye.

Friends who were at the property were shocked when they saw the injury to her face.

She went to Leeds General Infirmary where she was diagnosed with a fractured cheek bone.

The woman did not report the incident until five days later.

The prosecutor said: "She did not want to get him in to trouble but realised she should not have to suffer."

Semeniuk then turned up at her home on August 12 and threatened her.

He said: "I am going to kill you and your mum. You are going to die."

He returned to her home an hour later and made a further threat to kill her.

Miss Hussain said Semeniuk also sent the woman threatening text messages.

Semeniuk was interviewed about the offences and admitted punching the victim in the face but denied putting his foot on her throat.

Semeniuk, of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm and making threats to kill.

He has previous convictions for burglary and drug offences.

Shila Whitehead, mitigating, said: "He accepts that today he will be dealt with by way of a custodial sentence."

Jailing Semeniuk, Recorder Ian Harris said: "It was a disgraceful attack on her.

"It is fortunate that the injuries were not more serious on her."

"She has described the effect of the assault on her.

"She has had nightmares and flashbacks, difficulty in trusting men and has had to move address."
