Witness gives chase to burglar after break-in at Leeds home of woman, 92

POLICE are trying to trace a 'vital' witness who bravely chased off a burglar from the home of a 92-year-old woman in Leeds.

The male burglar was leaving the property on Cheltenham Street, Wortley, when he was spotted and briefly pursued by a man described as white and wearing a hi-vis waistcoat.

Police say the burglar had gained entry to the woman’s home through an unlocked door at about 9am on Saturday.

He began searching the property, continuing even when he saw the woman in bed in the living room.

The suspect, who stole an amount of jewellery, is described as white and was wearing blue jeans and a black top. Det Sgt James Gross, of the Leeds district crime team, said: “The victim has been left very traumatised by what happened and we would urgently like to hear from anyone with any information that could assist the investigation.

“We are particularly keen to identify the man who chased the suspect from the scene as he is a vital witness.”

Anyone with information is asked to get in touch with the Leeds district crime team via West Yorkshire Police’s 101 phone number.

l A 39-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident and is currently on bail pending further enquiries.
