Police didn’t have far to go when they got reports of a break-in at a building site in Leeds – next to their police station.

Officers at the Leeds inner east neighbourhood policing team (NPT) based at Killingbeck police station were notified of two men trying to steal a piece of plant equipment from the site of the new fire station being built off York Road on Friday.

Writing on Facebook, the NPT said: “To officers’ surprise the thieves had driven the roller into the back of a transit van.

“Unfortunately for the van its roof was too low so the quick thinking crooks simply cut and peeled back the roof!

“The daring duo had to flee empty handed on arrival of the police.

“One was detained and another is outstanding, for now at least.”
