Wakefield man dies in collision at depot in Sherburn in Elmet

A WORKER has died after a collision at a Sainsbury’s distribution centre in Sherburn in Elmet.

The man, who was aged in his fifties and was from the Wakefield area, was pronounced dead at the scene this morning (October 4).

A North Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: “Police were called at around 8.30am [...] to reports of a collision at a Wincanton distribution centre run on behalf of Sainsbury’s in Sherburn in Elmet in the Selby area.

“The collision involved a tractor unit – known as a shunter vehicle – and a male pedestrian.

“It happened in the loading area of the premises.

“Sadly, the pedestrian, a man aged in his fifties from the Wakefield area who was employed by Wincanton, was pronounced deceased at the scene of the collision.

“His next of kin have been informed of his death.”

Police have launched an investigation into the collision.

A spokeswoman for Sainsbury’s said: “Our sympathies are with the family of a colleague employed by our partner Wincanton, at the Sherburn site, following a tragic accident this morning.

“We are assisting them and the police with their investigations.”

A statement from Wincanton said: “We can confirm that there was an incident at 8.30am this morning at our Sherburn site, which sadly resulted in a fatality of a Wincanton employee.

“As of yet, the details of the incident are unclear.

“We are working with the emergency services to ascertain the circumstances that lead to this tragic incident.

“As this is a police investigation we will not be able to comment any further at this time.

“Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the deceased during this difficult time.”
