Fimber, a 14-year-old horse who joined West Yorkshire Police’s mounted section in 2004, died in an accident at the force’s base at Carr Gate, Wakefield, yesterday afternoon.

Superintendent Pat Casserly of West Yorkshire Police said: “We believe that Fimber was spooked whilst out in the paddock, causing him to attempt to vault the fences, when he collided with a wooden post.

“He was seriously injured and unfortunately died on his way to the vet. Officers and staff at Carr Gate are distraught at the sudden death of Fimber. He was friendly and courageous and will be sadly missed.”

The unexpected death was announced on West Yorkshire Police’s website today.

Officers from the Wakefield Central neighbourhood policing team posted a tribute to Fimber on Facebook.

They said: “All officers have strong links to our horses and dogs and are treated as fellow officers.
