Three arrested for money laundering after unlicensed driver stopped by police in Leeds

Three people were arrested for money laundering after police stopped an unlicensed driver in Leeds.

It happened on Saturday, January 16 on the A1 near Aberford.

Police initially stopped the car on the southbound carriageway of the motorway when the car came up as untaxed.

Despite the occupants initially providing false details, further checks found that the woman driving did not have a valid driving license.

It then transpired that one of the men in the car was also wanted by the Metropolitan Police in London.

Officers searched the car and found a large amount of money.

The driver and the passengers inside were all arrested for money laundering.

They were also all reported for breaching coronavirus regulations.

The car was then seized.

A further search carried out by Staffordshire Police at one of the detainee's homes found a cannabis farm.

A spokesman for North Yorkshire Police's Roads Policing Group said: "Police responded to a vehicle showing as untaxed on the A1M.

"Stopped on the southbound carriageway near Aberford.

"False details initially provided by occupants.

"Further checks ascertained that the female driver is unlicensed and uninsured.

"One of the male passengers also wanted by The Metropolitan Police.

"A further search on the vehicle and occupants locates a large amount of money.

"All are arrested for money laundering. Vehicle seized too.

"A search by Staffordshire Police on one of the detainees residence reveals some herbs that you generally wouldn’t use for cooking.

"Further arrested for cannabis cultivation.

"All 3 suspects reported for Covid-19 breaches."
