Police and firefighters rushed to the Barclays branch on Woodhouse Lane, near Leeds University, after the alarm went off at about 11.10am.

A G4S security van – used for cash deliveries – could be seen parked outside and there were suggestions the bank had been raided.

But police confirmed it was a false alarm. The “smoke” that could be seen is emitted when an alarm is activated as a security measure.
