More than 20 firefighters tackled the fire, which appeared to break out on the second floor, including an aerial pump used above the roof of the home.

The woman said the fire started out as just grey smoke, but quickly became an inferno.

"It all happened so quickly," she said. "I could see and hear the glass shattering.

"Three gents parked up on the grass. One had a hammer and I saw him going for the door."

The man pulled out a chocolate Labrador from the next-door house, which was also starting to smoke.

"The glass in the windows had all gone by this point," the woman added. "Smoke was coming from the house to the left, you could see it going across the roof.

"Then two fire engines turned up, and then another one which they plugged into the hydrant over the road.

"They were so quick."

Firefighters were still damping down the house well into late afternoon.

The fire has gutted the house.

"You can see the house behind it through the rafters," the woman added.

The Yorkshire Evening Post understands the property was rented and that those living there have somewhere to stay.

West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said there were no reports of any injuries or of anyone being rescued.

Another person living in the street said: "I heard three loud bangs before I went outside to see what was happening.

"Flames were coming out of upstairs bedroom and rooftop.

"Some guys broke down the door next door to save poor dog inside.

"It's not nice to see so close to home."
