The Leeds East Facebook team said they were surprised by residents attempting to get through "3ft plus floods" in normal cars.

Officers said this was "clearly not a good idea" and "unless you have a car like James bond then please do not try this."

Conditions in Ledston and Fairburn are "extremely bad" according to police.

The team posted: "Just been out this morning looking at the floods in the area, it always surprises me that people in normal cars try getting through 3 ft plus floods.

"Can I remind people that this is clearly not a good idea and unless you have a car like James bond then please do NOT try this, the emergency teams are stretched at the moment and trying to fish cars out of the floods only adds to the situation.

"We were lucky this morning that several people in the villages have a decent 4 x 4 and were helping people. Massive thanks to Rick and George from The farm in Fairburn in their Discovery.

"You will not be covered on your insurance for this and it will potentially cost you thousands in replacing your car

"It is extremely bad in Ledston, and fairburn, the road closure signs are there for a reason."
