Police swooped to stop a trio who allegedly made off with hundreds of pounds worth of stolen spirits from a Yorkshire ASDA.

The three men were arrested less than half an hour after being spotted stealing spirits including gin, whisky and vodka by 'vigilant security staff' at ASDA Monks Cross, York.

Police seized hundreds of pounds worth of stolen goods after stopping the Hyundai I10 on the A19 near Thirsk.

The men - all aged in their 40s from Ormesby near Middlesbrough - were arrested on suspicion of shop theft.

The driver was further arrested on suspicion of drug driving after testing positive for cocaine at the roadside.

The car was searched and more than 20 bottles of spirits including gin, whisky and vodka, were found.

The three men have been released under investigation while enquiries continue, police said.
