Police spat at and 'lots' flouting law with street parties in part of Yorkshire

The information was issued by Humberside Police, who said in a statement that Friday - VE Day - was 'busier than we would have wanted to see' and 'lots of people' were not complying with social distancing.

The force said in a statement: "Yesterday was busier than we would have wanted to see across the whole Force area. Lots of people not complying with Government social distancing guidelines and holding large gatherings and parties.

"Most dealt with through compliance however we have and will continue to enforce and fine if appropriate. Please #StayAtHome #StaySafe"

The force added that eight police officers were assaulted through the day including officers spat at during an arrest.

The statement added: "Police officers assaulted Yesterday (Friday 8 May) eight police officers were assaulted as they carried out their duties.

"In responding to four domestic related incidents (three in Hull and one in the East Riding) police officers were physically assaulted and spat at as they arrested three men and a woman.

"Assistant Chief Constable, Paul Anderson said he was appalled to see assaults on emergency services personnel.

“I find it unbelievable that some people choose to behave in this way. “Our officers and staff come to work to protect people to keep them safe and that will always be our priority.

“Thankfully none of these officers have been seriously hurt but it is wholly unacceptable that they should have to suffer any abuse in the course of their duties, especially in these testing times when our officers are risking their own safety as they attend to incidents and protect others.

“Being assaulted is not an acceptable part of their role and we will look to take action and seek prosecution for those individuals who commit such offences.” All four people remain in custody as we continue our investigations. #ProtectTheProtectors #NotWhatWeGoToWorkFor #ItsNotOKSee less"

In Leeds, a report from police said two officers were spat at on Friday.
