It happened on February 5 when the guard on the 7.38pm train challenged a man and a woman who did not have tickets.

A British Transport Police (BTP) spokesman said: "The man became verbally abusive and, as they left the train, he punched the guard – leaving him a serious cut to his eyebrow, which required stitches.

"The pair left the train at Ben Rhydding station and continued to shout obscenities and bang on the train as they left."

Officers would like to speak to a number of witnesses who may have seen the incident, including a woman who offered to give first aid to the victim.

The offenders were both described as white teenagers.
