A police officer was hit by a car while helping a broken down van driver on the M62.

The incident happened on Wednesday at about 5.50pm about half a mile before junction 24 at Ainley Top.

Officers were on the M62 westbound carriageway assisting with a broken-down white transit van when a dark grey Volkswagen estate pulled up onto the hard shoulder.

As one of the officers approached the Volkswagen to speak to the driver, it pulled off, striking the officer with its wing mirror.

The impact knocked him to the ground.

He was left with cuts and bruises.

Police are appealing for information to identity this vehicle and its driver and are asking for anyone who may have witnessed it, or may have Dash Cam footage .
