Sergeant Ian Micklethwaite reminded them that only those living close to Temple Newsam should be visiting the park and that they should park considerately.

Leeds City Council, who manage the site, have closed all car parks at Temple Newsam, as well as the house and Home Farm, until lockdown restrictions are lifted.

They have taken the same action at other parks across Leeds, including Roundhay Park in order to deter visitors who do not live locally from making non-essential journeys.

Yet people taking essential exercise in Temple Newsam Park, including dog walkers, said they had seen groups having barbecues and even children playing on equipment at the closed Go Ape attraction.

Video footage also circulated on social media of large numbers of cars parked on the grass at Temple Newsam on Saturday, when the weather was warm and sunny.
