Police have evacuated parts of Leeds city centre after a 'rusty metal object' was found in the river at Canal Wharf.

UPDATE: The military has attended and identified the object and the police cordon has been liftedResidents and businesses have been evacuated including at Water Lane Boathouse, which is metres away from where the object was discovered.

West Yorkshire Police have warned the public to avoid the area.

In a tweet, the police said: "Police are currently dealing with an incident in Leeds City Centre where a rusty metal object was found in the river in Canal Wharf.

"A cordon is in place and the local area has been evacuated. The public are advised to avoid the area at this time."

Traffic is being diverted away from Water Lane and Neville Street is closed, preventing access into Leeds city centre via the tunnels.
