Police deployed after children spotted playing on M1 in West Yorkshire

Highways England launched an urgent plea for children to not play on the motorway - after a pair were spotted on the M1 in Yorkshire.

In a tweet, Highways Yorkshire said: "Schools are out due to #Covid_19.

"Sadly it has not taken taken long for children to come playing on the motorway.

"Parents - our plea is for you to talk to your children to alert them of the dangers of the fast moving road.

The incident was on the M1 between Junction 40 Flushdyke and J39 for Durkar.

Traffic officers from Highways England and the West Yorkshire Police Roads Policing Unit were deployed to the scene.

Speeds were reduced on the motorway as per Highways England standard protocols.

These restrictions have now been removed.

The scene is now clear, it was confirmed.
