Rodriquez pleaded guilty to wounding with intent, possession of a blade and an offence of robbery in relation to a separate incident.

The 20-year-old victim went to Rodriquez's home on Longroyd Grove, Beeston, to retrieve his phone.

Rodriquez was not at home but the victim spoke to the teenager's mum and told her about the missing phone.

His mum was unhappy about her son taking the phone and took a taxi with the victim to find Rodriquez.

They found the defendant with a group of others in an alleyway off Dewsbury Road.

The teenager became angry with the victim for involving his mum and attacked him.

He felt blows to the back of his head then saw Rodriquez was holding a knife.

Mr Hampton said the defendant's mum later gave a statement to police describing how her son 'flipped'.

She initially thought he had punched the victim but then saw him with the knife.

She helped the victim while emergency services arrived at the scene and then handed the knife to police officers.

The woman told officers she had previously seen knives in her son's bedroom but had got rid of them.

The victim needed stitches to the head wound and was given pain killers.

The prosecutor said there had been a danger of air getting into the wounds which could have caused a brain infection.

The court heard the robbery offence took place on November 22, 2019, near to the St John's Centre in Leeds city centre.

The barrister said: "He said 'it is only my fault that I am in this position'.

"That shows a substantial insight into his behaviour for someone who is so young."

Mr Littllehales said Rodriquez accepted he would be facing a lengthy period in custody but is motivated to change.

The Recorder of Leeds, Judge Guy Kearl QC, adjourned the case to consider the sentence.

Rodriquez will be sentenced at 10am tomorrow (January 15).
