Man used knife to stab his neighbour in the hand during parking row in Leeds street

Karl Newsome inflicted the knife wound after being asked to swap insurance details.

The 42-year-old pointed the weapon towards the victim and he suffered a cut between his thumb and index finger as he tried to defend himself from the blade.

Newsome then tried to burgle a house and racially abused an off-licence owner after he was released on bail

Leeds Crown Court heard the knife attack took place in April this year when the victim went to Newsome's home in Bramley to discuss a "minor parking collision."

The defendant took out the knife and said "I'm f****** sick of you" before pointing it towards him and inflicting the injury.

When interviewed by police about the incident Newsome claimed he had been acting self defence.

Newsome then went on to carry out an attempted burglary at a flat near his home

He targeted the property while the woman who lived there was out.

She returned to find a metal bar wedged in the front door and a screwdriver on the step.

Forsenic evidence on the two items linked Newsome to the offence.

Hours later Newsome shouted vile racial abuse at the owner of Stanningley Wines.

The court heard the defendant appeared to be under the influence of drink and drugs when he went into the store at 2.30pm.

He raised his fist at the shop owner when he was asked to leave the premises.

As he left the shop he picked up a stick and used it to smash a window, causing £300 worth of damage.

Newsome was arrested over the offences and said he could not remember them and was sorry for what he had done.

Newsome, of South End Terrace, Bramley pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm, possession of an offensive weapon, attempted burglary, racially aggravated harassment and criminal damage.

Richard Reed, mitigating, said Newsome carried a knife with him on a regular basis for protection since being the victim of a random attack in Bramley Shopping Centre a number of years ago.

Mr Reed said the attack led to Newsome suffering from depression and increasing his use of illicit drugs.

He added: "He certainly understands now why he should not have been carrying a weapon at all."

Mr Reed said Newsome was receiving treatment to address his drug addiction and had been promised work as a plasterer if he was not sent immediately to prison.

Newsome was given a 20-month prison sentence, suspended for 18 months.

He was also ordered to pay £300 compensation to the shop owner and £100 to the knife attack victim.

Judge Andrew Stubbs QC said: "I am taking a chance on you and if you do not take it custody will be inevitable."
