Man remanded in custody over Leeds ‘hit-and run’ death

A man has appeared in court over the alleged hit-and-run death of a man in Leeds.

Majid Malik is charged with causing James Gilbey’s death by dangerous driving as well as failing to stop after an accident and failing to report an accident.

Mr Gilbey, 25, from Bramley, was returning home after seeing a friend in Kirkstall on Monday night when he was hit by a VW Golf on Stanningley Bypass. He died at the scene.

Malik, of Silverhill Avenue, Bradford, spoke only to confirm his personal details when he appeared at Leeds Magistrates’ Court today. He was remanded in custody to appear at Leeds Crown Court on July 31.

Police have arrested another man, aged 28, from Bradford, on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

He is believed to be the driver of an Audi A5 which was driving on Stanningley Bypass at the time of the incident.#

Seven others who were arrested have been released on bail.
