Man charged after police spat and coughed at with 'Covid' and parcels stolen from Amazon van

A man has been charged after police were spat at and coughed on by someone claiming to have coronavirus.

It happened in Headingley on February 13 after Amazon parcels were seen to be being stolen from a delivery van on Otley Road.

Police officers had 'invaluable help' from members of the public and arrested a man following a short foot chase.

He was arrested on suspicion of theft from a motor vehicle, possessing a kitchen knife and two accounts of assaulting emergency service workers.

The man has since been charged.

He is set to appear at Leeds Magistrates Court in the morning of Monday, February 15.

A post on the West Yorkshire Police Leeds North West Facebook Page said: "Male arrested and charged.

"Yesterday officers along with invaluable help from members of the public and following a short foot chase arrested an adult male on suspicion of Theft From a Motor vehicle on Otley Road in Headingley after they were seen to remove Amazon packages from a delivery van.

"The male was further arrested for possessing a bladed article (kitchen knife) and Two accounts of assaulting emergency service workers as the male stated he had Covid and then spat on one officer and coughed directly into another officers face.

"The male has been remanded into custody so he can appear before Magistrates on Monday morning."
