Man charged after police raid large West Yorkshire cannabis farm 'linked to human trafficking'

A man has been charged after police discovered a large cannabis farm in West Yorkshire, which they believe is linked to human trafficking offences.

Officers forced entry into a building in Wakefield city centre on Sunday, where they suspected criminal activity.

They discovered a large cannabis farm and a suspect was arrested at the scene.

A police spokesperson said evidence in the building linked the cultivation to serious organised crime and human trafficking.

The building was also a fire risk and work was carried out to make it safe.

A man was charged with the production of cannabis and was due to appear in court on Tuesday morning.

An application has been made to remand him in prison pending his trial.

In a statement issued on Facebook, the Wakefield City and North West Neighbourhood Policing Team said: "Yesterday City & NW Officers actioned intelligence linked to an extensive cannabis farm in the city centre.

"Officers forced entry into the building and discovered a large cannabis farm. A suspect was detained and arrested.

"Evidence at the scene linked the cultivation to serious organised crime and human trafficking. The building was also a fire risk, which has now been made safe.

"This evening a male suspect was charged with production of cannabis. He is due in court tomorrow morning where an application has been made to remand him into prison pending trial."
