Man beaten with golf clubs in street

A GANG attacked a man in broad daylight with golf clubs and pieces of wood as horrified locals watched the violence unfold.

Police are now urging locals to remain calm following the incident in Lowther Street, York at around 12.35pm on Saturday, and are keen to reassure residents the incident was an isolated one.

The scene of the assault was cordoned off for around three hours to allow detectives to examine the scene and for forensic evidence to be gathered.

The 28-year-old victim, from York, was attacked with implements which are believed to have been stolen from a shed in a nearby street. The attackers had fled before police arrived.

The victim suffered a head injury and was taken to York District Hospital for treatment. He has since been discharged

Officers are now appealing for witnesses to come forward urgently. Detective Sergeant Rebecca Dyer of York CID, said: “Although this was an alarming incident for local people who saw it unfold in the middle of a street, I would like to reassure residents that we believe that the incident was confined to people who knew each other and that the wider community, although shocked by the incident, were not at risk of violence from the offenders.

“We need to gather as much information as possible and are appealing to anyone who witnessed the incident to please contact us.”

Witnesses should contact North Yorkshire Police via 101, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111, quoting incident number 12130172993.

Two youths aged 18 and one aged 19, all from York, are being held in police custody for questioning about the incident.
