Man arrested after five police cars surround and stop stolen vehicle on the M1

A man has been arrested after five police cars surrounded and stopped a stolen vehicle on the M1.

Police were called to reports of a theft of a car at about 8.40am.

It had been stolen from the Chapelthorpe area of Wakefield.

Officers closed off the motorway northbound while they stopped the car.

It was recovered by officers on the M1 at junction 40.

Lanes one and two remained closed while the car was recovered.

A driver who witnessed the incident said that the car had been facing the wrong way.

She said: "The car was really close to the slip road at junction 40 and it was facing the wrong way.

"There were about five or six police cars surrounding it."

A 27-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident.
